Chrysler Pacifica keys

Pacifica fob missing? Minivan keys, made on site.

A Pacifica fob runs the sliding doors, the liftgate and the engine, so when a child hides it in a toy bin or it drops between the seats for good, the whole family schedule stops.

Two vehicles, one name

Which Pacifica do you have?

The Pacifica name has been used on two quite different Chrysler vehicles. The first was a crossover wagon sold in the mid 2000s, a tall, car-based vehicle with three rows of seats. The second is the minivan that arrived for the 2017 model year and replaced the Town and Country, available in gasoline and plug-in hybrid versions.

They use different keys. The older crossover generally uses a blade key with a transponder in the head, turned in an ignition cylinder, with remote functions either built into the key head or on a separate remote depending on year and equipment. The minivan uses a proximity fob with Keyless Enter 'n Go push-button start on most vehicles. That fob carries buttons for the locks, the liftgate, and the power sliding doors, and it hides an emergency blade for opening the driver's door.

So the first question on a Pacifica call is which one it is. If it has sliding side doors, it is the minivan. If it has four hinged doors and a rear liftgate, it is the older crossover. That single fact changes nearly everything about the job.

In both cases, the vehicle checks the key before allowing the engine or hybrid system to start. A blade that turns the lock or a fob that looks right is not enough on its own. The key has to be registered to that vehicle.

Most of our Pacifica calls involve the minivan, and most of this page focuses on it. Where the older crossover differs, we say so.

Pacifica keys, crossover and minivan

The table shows the usual setup for each. Trim and equipment packages varied, so we confirm from the vehicle itself.

The older Pacifica crossover is now a vehicle most people keep because it still does the job. Its keys have worn, its remotes have cracked, and many owners have lost the separate remote along the way and simply lock the doors with the key. For these vehicles, we cut a key to the ignition and door locks, register the transponder, and pair a remote if the owner wants one.

The Pacifica minivan is a much more connected vehicle. Its proximity fob is detected by antennas at the doors and inside the cabin. The fob's buttons operate the locks, the power sliding doors on each side, and the power liftgate on equipped vehicles, and some vehicles support remote start. Registration of a new fob is done through the diagnostic port, and on many systems every fob you want to keep has to be present because the vehicle's accepted list is rewritten.

The Pacifica Hybrid adds a plug-in hybrid system, but the fob works in the same basic way. Instead of listening for an engine start, we confirm that the vehicle reaches its ready-to-drive state with the new fob, and we test the door functions just as on the gasoline minivan.

Chrysler also sells the closely related Voyager minivan. Its fobs are similar in principle, but features and button layouts can differ. If you have a Voyager, tell us, because a fob must match the vehicle it is registered to.

Sliding door buttons matter

On a minivan, the sliding door buttons are used constantly, often more than lock and unlock. A new fob that starts the vehicle but does not open the sliding doors is not a finished job. We test each sliding door, the liftgate, and every other button your fob has.

Families

Where minivan fobs actually go

Pacifica fobs do not usually disappear in dramatic ways. They go missing in the ordinary chaos of family life. A toddler plays with the fob and hides it in a toy bin. It slides between the second row seat and the console and falls into the floor tracks. It goes home in a diaper bag, a sports bag, or a grandparent's purse. It gets left on the bleachers at a swim meet.

Before calling for a replacement, it is worth a thorough search of the minivan itself. Check between and under all seats, including the seat tracks, the storage bins in the floor on equipped models, the door pockets, and the cargo well. Many fobs that seem lost are inside the vehicle. Use a flashlight, because a black fob on dark carpet is easy to miss in daylight and nearly invisible at night.

If the fob is truly gone, count every fob the family has. If one is at a grandparent's house, getting it back may turn an all keys lost job into a simple duplicate.

Children and fob buttons are a combination worth thinking about. A child pressing the sliding door button while the minivan is parked on a slope or near traffic is a real safety concern. Keeping fobs out of small hands, and using the child locks on the sliding doors, reduces that risk.

Once the key situation is sorted, a simple household rule helps: each driver has one fob, one spare lives at home in a known place, and no fob lives in the minivan.

Diagnosis

Common Pacifica key problems

A minivan that says the key is not detected most often has a fob with a weak battery. The vehicle may warn about low fob battery before it fails completely. The owner's manual describes a backup method for starting with a weak fob, which on many Chrysler vehicles involves pressing the start button with the fob itself. If that works, a new battery is the answer.

Sliding door buttons that stop working while the fob still starts the vehicle point to worn button contacts or board damage. Minivan fobs are pressed many times a day, and their buttons wear.

A sliding door that does not respond to any fob, or to the button on the door itself, is more likely a door problem than a fob problem. We check whether the door responds to its interior and exterior controls before assuming the fob is at fault.

A cracked fob case is common after years of being dropped and handled by children. If the board is healthy, a new case can sometimes be fitted.

On the older crossover, worn keys and ignitions are the common complaints. A key cut to code often helps.

A weak vehicle battery can make any fob look faulty. Minivans that sit for a few days, or that run entertainment systems with the engine off, may have low voltage. We check it first. On the Hybrid, the small auxiliary battery matters for starting the system, and it can also run low.

Hybrid

Notes for Pacifica Hybrid owners

The Pacifica Hybrid combines a gasoline engine with an electric drive system and a battery pack that can be charged from a plug. From a key perspective, it behaves like the gasoline minivan: a proximity fob, push-button start, and door functions on the fob.

The difference is in how starting looks. When the fob is recognized and the start button pressed, the Hybrid may enter its ready state silently, with the engine off. A new owner of a replacement fob sometimes thinks the vehicle has not started because there is no engine sound. The dash indicates when the vehicle is ready to drive.

The Hybrid also has a conventional small battery that powers the vehicle's electronics before the hybrid system is running. If that battery runs low, the vehicle may not recognize a fob or respond to the start button, even though the large drive battery is charged. That is a common cause of confusing no-start situations on hybrids, and we check it before anything else.

A Hybrid parked at a public charger with the fob lost nearby is an awkward situation. Tell us if the vehicle is connected to a charger, and whether the charging station has time limits or fees, so we can plan around them.

Registration of a new fob on a Hybrid is done through the diagnostic port, like the gasoline minivan. We confirm the vehicle reaches its ready state and test all door functions.

Pacificas around New Castle and Kent counties

The Pacifica is a family vehicle through and through, and in New Castle County it is everywhere families are: school lines in Hockessin, Pike Creek and Newark, sports complexes around Bear and Middletown, and shopping centers along Route 202, Route 40, and Kirkwood Highway.

In Kent County, Pacificas serve families in Dover, Smyrna, Camden, Magnolia, and Clayton, and many military families at the base. Moving households is a classic time for fobs to disappear into boxes.

Minivans also do a lot of summer beach driving. A fob that goes into the ocean in a swimsuit pocket, or is buried in the sand at the shore, is rarely recovered. If your family heads to the beach, carry one fob and leave the spare at home.

Summer heat inside a parked minivan is hard on fob batteries, and winter salt reaches the driver's door lock, which on a proximity fob vehicle is rarely used and can stiffen. We test the emergency blade in the actual door.

We need access to the driver's door and the diagnostic port under the dash. A driveway, garage, or open lot works well.

The visit

How we replace a Pacifica fob on site

We confirm ownership with a registration or title and matching photo ID, or with paperwork showing how you are connected to the owner. For a leased minivan, the registration and your ID usually cover it.

We identify whether the vehicle is the crossover or the minivan, and on a minivan, whether it is gasoline or Hybrid and which equipment it has.

We cut the blade. On the crossover, that is the ignition and door key. On the minivan, it is the emergency blade for the driver's door.

We register the key or fob through the diagnostic port. Every fob you want to keep should be present.

We test everything: lock, unlock, both sliding doors, liftgate, panic, remote start where equipped, entry at the door handle, and starting or reaching the ready state several times with the fob in different spots in the cabin.

Before you call

What to have ready for a Pacifica key visit

The model year and, ideally, the VIN from the registration or windshield.

Whether it is the minivan or the older crossover, and whether the minivan is a Hybrid.

What happens when you try to start, and any messages on the dash.

How many fobs exist, where each is, and whether any is at another address.

Where the vehicle is parked, and whether a Hybrid is plugged in at a public charger.

Whether you have already searched the vehicle thoroughly, including seat tracks and floor bins. It is surprising how often the fob turns up there.

Whether the minivan is leased, and if so, anything the lease says about returning keys. That can affect whether you want an original fob.

Security

Should you remove a lost Pacifica fob?

If the fob was lost somewhere connected to the minivan, such as a school lot where it is parked every day, removing it from the vehicle's accepted list is sensible. Anyone who finds a fob in a lot can press its buttons and find the vehicle.

If the fob was lost at home or somewhere with no connection to the vehicle, many families decide the risk is low, and that is a reasonable choice.

Removal works by registering the fobs you have and setting the vehicle to accept only those. Every fob you want to keep must be present. A fob that is not there may stop working.

Removal does not change the driver's door lock. The emergency blade on a lost fob can still open that door mechanically. For most families that remaining risk is acceptable, but the door lock can be rekeyed if you prefer.

If the fob was on a ring with house keys and anything identifying your address, think about the house locks too.

The first Pacifica

Keys for the mid 2000s Pacifica crossover

The original Pacifica crossover is less common now, but those still on the road tend to belong to owners who like them and intend to keep driving them. Their key needs are different from the minivan's, and simpler in some ways.

The key is a blade with a transponder in the head. It turns in a conventional ignition cylinder. After many years of use, that blade has usually worn, and the ignition may feel rough or require a wiggle. Cutting a new key to the original code rather than copying the worn one often restores smooth turning. If a fresh key still binds, the ignition cylinder itself has worn and needs repair.

The remote functions depend on the year and equipment. Some crossovers have remote buttons on the key head, others have a separate remote. Many owners lost the remote years ago. Pairing a new one is a separate step from making a key that starts the vehicle, and we can do either or both.

When every key is lost, the job is a blade cut to the ignition and door locks and a transponder registered to the vehicle through the diagnostic port. That is routine work at the vehicle.

Because these vehicles are older, it is worth having two good keys rather than one. A single worn key in a high-mileage ignition is the setup most likely to leave you stranded.

Two routes

Dealer or locksmith for a Pacifica fob?

A Chrysler dealer supplies original fobs and has factory software. For vehicles with replaced security modules, network faults, or systems newer than field tools support, the dealer is the right route. We will tell you if yours is one of those.

For most Pacificas, the fob can be replaced where the vehicle sits. That avoids towing a minivan, and it avoids a service appointment in the middle of a busy family week.

We supply original or matched aftermarket fobs and say which you are getting. Many families choose original for the daily fob and a matched aftermarket fob for the spare. Either way, every button is tested at the vehicle.

If your family is down to one fob, have a second made now. With a minivan full of children, the day the last fob disappears is never a good day.

Straight answers

Chrysler Pacifica key replacement FAQ

Can you replace a Pacifica fob when every fob is lost?

In most cases, yes. After confirming ownership, we cut the emergency blade to open the driver's door, then register a new fob through the diagnostic port. The minivan usually stays where it is parked. Vehicles with replaced security modules or network faults may need dealer service, and we will explain that after testing.

Will a new fob open my Pacifica's sliding doors?

On minivans equipped with power sliding doors, a correctly matched and registered fob should operate them just as the original did. We test both sliding doors, the liftgate, and every other button as part of the job.

My Pacifica Hybrid will not respond to the fob. Is the fob dead?

Not necessarily. The small auxiliary battery that powers the vehicle's electronics before the hybrid system starts can run low and prevent the vehicle from recognizing a fob. We check that battery before recommending a new fob. Also note the Hybrid may reach its ready state silently.

How do I start a Pacifica with a weak fob battery?

The owner's manual describes a backup method, which on many Chrysler vehicles involves pressing the start button with the fob itself. If the vehicle starts, the fob is still registered and a new battery should fix it.

Is my Pacifica the minivan or the crossover?

If it has sliding side doors, it is the minivan sold from the 2017 model year onward. If it has four hinged doors and a rear liftgate, it is the crossover sold in the mid 2000s. They use different keys, so this matters when you call.

Do I need all our Pacifica fobs at the appointment?

Yes, if you want them to keep working. Registration can rewrite the vehicle's accepted list, and a fob that is not present may stop working. Gather every fob, including any held by grandparents or caregivers.

Will a Voyager fob work on my Pacifica?

Not reliably. The Voyager is closely related, but fobs can differ in features and buttons, and each fob must be registered to the specific vehicle. Match the fob to your exact minivan.
