Lexus RX smart key lost? Handled at the SUV.

The RX has been on sale long enough to span master and valet keys, early smart access, current smart keys and hybrid models that stay silent when they are ready to drive. Each one is handled a little differently.

The system

The keys a Lexus RX has used over the years

The Lexus RX helped create the luxury crossover category when it arrived in the late 1990s, and it has been redesigned several times since. Along the way the key has moved from a traditional cut key with a chip to a smart key that never leaves the owner's pocket. Because the RX tends to be kept for a long time and passed down within families, we see every generation of it on Delaware roads, from early RX 300s with high mileage to recent models that are still under factory warranty.

The earliest RX models use a cut key with a transponder chip in the head. Lexus, like its parent company, divides keys into two roles. The master key does everything. The valet key starts the vehicle and opens the doors but is intended to keep a parking attendant out of certain storage areas. On these older vehicles, the difference between a master and a valet key matters when adding keys, because some procedures rely on having a working master key available.

Later RX generations introduced a smart key. On vehicles equipped with it, the key stays in a pocket, the doors unlock when a handle is gripped, and the engine or hybrid system starts with a button on the dash. Some RX models from the middle years offered the smart key as optional equipment, so two RX SUVs from the same year can have different key systems. The smart key hides a mechanical blade for the driver door.

The newest RX generations continue with a smart key and add more electronic layers around it. Some recent Lexus vehicles also support using a phone as a key through the manufacturer's app. That feature sits on top of the physical smart key rather than replacing it, and a lost smart key still needs a physical replacement.

The RX hybrid models add one more wrinkle. A hybrid RX does not always start its gasoline engine when the start button is pressed. Instead, the dash shows that the vehicle is ready to drive and the engine starts later when it is needed. Owners of a newly purchased used hybrid sometimes call us because the car seems not to start, when in fact it is ready and simply quiet.

Systems by generation

From a master key to a smart key, and why the difference matters

This table describes the key equipment we usually find on each broad stage of the RX. Options and prior repairs change individual vehicles, so we identify the exact system at the SUV before starting.

StageTypical keyIgnitionWhat the job usually involves
Early RX, first generationCut master key and valet key with transponder chipsKey turns an ignition cylinderCut the blade and add the chip, with an existing master key making the process simpler
Middle years, second generationRemote head key on many, smart key on equipped vehiclesKeyed ignition or push button depending on equipmentIdentify the equipment, then cut and program the right type of key
Third generation onwardSmart key with hidden emergency bladePush button startProgram the smart key and cut the emergency blade to the door lock
Any stage, all keys lostNothing to copyVariesOriginate a blade, then add a key through a procedure that can be more involved on smart key vehicles

On older RX models with a cut key, the job is familiar. We cut the blade to the lock rather than copying a worn key, then add the chip to the immobilizer. If the owner still has a working master key, the process is usually straightforward. If only a valet key remains, some procedures have limits, and we will explain what that means for your specific vehicle on the phone.

Smart key vehicles are more involved. Adding a smart key when one working smart key is present is a common and manageable job. When every smart key is gone, the procedure on some Lexus and Toyota smart key generations requires additional steps, and on certain vehicles it may involve working with a module inside the vehicle. That is why an all keys lost smart key appointment takes longer than adding a spare, and why a second smart key is worth having long before the first one is lost.

Master key, valet key and what each one can do

On older RX models, the valet key is meant for a parking attendant or a service shop. It starts the vehicle and opens the doors, but it is intended to keep the glove box and certain storage areas locked. Many owners keep the valet key in a drawer and forget about it, then use it as a spare when the master key is lost. It will get you driving, but when it is time to add keys, having a master key available makes the job simpler. If you still have a valet key, bring it.

The quiet hybrid

An RX hybrid that shows a ready indicator on the dash is ready to drive even if the engine is silent. If you press the start button and the ready indicator does not appear, the vehicle did not accept the key or has another problem. A smart key with a weak battery can cause that. So can a low auxiliary battery, which on a hybrid is a smaller battery that powers the electronics and the startup process. We check both before blaming the key.

Phone as key on newer models

Some recent Lexus models allow a phone to act as a digital key through the manufacturer's app, and a household can share digital access with other drivers. That is convenient, but it depends on the account, the app and the phone. When a physical smart key is lost, the digital key does not replace it, and the vehicle still needs a physical key registered for situations where the phone is dead or unavailable. If you use a digital key, tell us, so we can make sure nothing we do interferes with it.

Two routes

Locksmith or dealer for an RX key?

Lexus owners are often loyal to their dealer, and for many services that makes sense. For a lost key, the question is whether the RX can get there. An RX with no working key must be towed, and a luxury crossover with all wheel drive should go on a flatbed, which takes time to arrange.

We make the key where the RX is parked. The blade is cut in our service vehicle and the smart key or chip key is registered from the driver seat. For an owner stranded at an office park in Wilmington or at home in Greenville, that means the vehicle does not have to move at all.

A dealer is the right choice in some situations. When a security module has failed, when no key works including keys that worked before, when an open recall touches the electrical or security systems, or when the newest vehicle's security requirements call for a factory procedure, we tell you plainly. Adding a key to a vehicle with an underlying fault only hides the fault for a while.

We use original or quality aftermarket keys, and we say which before the work starts. On a Lexus, many owners prefer original smart keys because they match the look and feel of the vehicle exactly. For an older RX 300 with high mileage, a well made aftermarket key may be the sensible choice for a spare. Either way, we program and test at the vehicle.

If you already bought a smart key online, send photographs of it before the appointment. Smart keys for these vehicles are specific to region, frequency and generation, and some online keys were previously registered to another vehicle in a way that prevents reuse.

Diagnosis

What goes wrong with RX keys

A smart key with a fading battery is the most common cause of a key not detected message. The RX usually provides a backup method, such as touching the start button with the smart key itself, so the vehicle can read the key even when its battery is weak. If that works, a fresh battery is often the whole fix.

The emergency blade inside the smart key is often forgotten. Owners who have never used it may find that the door lock cylinder has seized from years of disuse, especially on vehicles that live outside through Delaware winters. It is worth trying the blade on the driver door once a year so it works when you need it.

Older chip keys fail at the head. The plastic cracks, the chip loosens and the vehicle starts only some of the time. A chip that has shifted inside a damaged head can sometimes be moved to a new shell, but a lost chip means a new key.

Worn ignition cylinders on older RX models produce keys that turn only after jiggling. A new key cut to the correct depth does not fix a worn cylinder, and in that case we discuss ignition repair.

A hybrid auxiliary battery that is low can make the RX appear dead or refuse to power up, even with a perfectly good smart key. The auxiliary battery is small and can drain if the vehicle sits for a few weeks, for example while the owner travels.

Interference from other smart keys, phones and electronic devices kept together can confuse detection. If the RX struggles to find the key only when it is in a bag with other electronics, try carrying it separately.

Delaware use

Where we meet the RX in New Castle and Kent

The RX is common in the northern suburbs of New Castle County, in Greenville, Hockessin, Talleyville, Pike Creek and the neighborhoods off Route 202, where it is often a long term family vehicle. We also meet it in office parking areas in Wilmington, at medical buildings in Newark and Christiana, and at the homes of retirees who have driven an RX for many years. In Kent County, it turns up in Dover and Camden neighborhoods and at the homes of military families who bought it used. A smart key goes missing at a restaurant, in a golf bag, at a grandchild's recital, or between a handbag and a coat pocket. When you call, tell us where the RX is and whether it is somewhere with limited parking, such as a garage with a low clearance.

Older RX models

Keeping a high mileage RX key reliable

Many Delaware RX owners keep their vehicle for well over a decade. That long ownership means the original keys have been in and out of pockets for years. A chip key from an early RX has been turned thousands of times, and a smart key from a middle generation vehicle has been dropped, sat on and left in the sun more often than the owner remembers.

The easiest way to keep an older RX dependable is to replace worn keys before they fail completely. A key with a cracked head, a blade that has rounded edges or buttons that need to be pressed several times is a key on its way out. Replacing it while another key still works is a routine appointment. Waiting until it fails turns the next loss into an all keys lost visit.

When you buy a used RX, ask how many keys come with it. A used vehicle with one key has no spare, and the previous owner may have kept others. Having a key added and any unaccounted keys removed from the vehicle memory is a sensible step after purchase.

For families passing an RX from parents to a college student or a new driver, the same advice applies. Count the keys, test them, and make sure the new driver has a spare somewhere other than the vehicle.

Straight answers

Lexus RX key replacement FAQ

Can you make a Lexus RX smart key when all keys are lost?

In many cases, yes. We confirm ownership, open the vehicle without damage and originate the emergency blade. On some Lexus smart key generations, adding a key with no working key present takes extra steps and may involve work on a module inside the vehicle, so it takes longer than adding a spare. We identify the exact vehicle first and tell you if a factory route is the better choice.

Is the valet key enough to get another key made?

A valet key starts older RX models and opens the doors, so you can drive the vehicle. For adding keys, some procedures work more simply with a master key available, and a valet key alone may limit the options. We ask about it on the phone. Bring whatever keys you have, including a valet key, to the appointment.

My hybrid RX shows ready but the engine is silent. Is something wrong?

No. A hybrid RX can be ready to drive with the gasoline engine off, and the engine starts on its own when it is needed. If the ready indicator does not appear after pressing the start button with your foot on the brake, the vehicle did not accept the key or has another issue, such as a low auxiliary battery. That is when to call.

Can a cracked RX smart key be repaired?

Often. If the circuit board is healthy and the buttons work, the board can be moved into a new case and the emergency blade cut to match the door. If the key has been wet, if the buttons fail intermittently, or if parts are missing, a new smart key is more dependable. Bring every piece of the broken key.

Should a lost RX smart key be removed from the vehicle?

If whoever finds it could connect it to the vehicle, removing it is a good idea. Bring every key you plan to keep, because the process may need them all. Removing a key electronically does not change the door lock, so the emergency blade in the lost key could still open the driver door.

Does a phone digital key replace a lost smart key?

No. A digital key on the manufacturer's app is an extra convenience, not a substitute for a physical smart key. The vehicle still needs a registered physical key for situations where the phone is dead, lost or unavailable. If you use a digital key, tell us so we can keep it working after the new physical key is added.

When should an RX go to the Lexus dealer?

Choose the dealer when no key works including ones that worked before, when a security or body module has failed or been replaced and not set up, when a recall affects the relevant systems, or when the newest vehicle's security requirements call for a factory procedure. Otherwise, most RX key work can be completed where the vehicle is parked.
