Camden, Delaware
What makes locks in Camden different.
Camden and Wyoming sit shoulder to shoulder south of Dover and function as one community with two town governments. Camden has an old core along the main road and a considerable amount of newer housing around it, plus the retail development along Route 13 that serves the whole southern side of the county.
The housing stock
The historic core has nineteenth-century housing with period hardware, some of it well kept. Beyond it, post-war and recent subdivision building predominates, running the usual builder-grade specification. The mixture means we may work on a mortise lock in the morning and a keypad deadbolt on a five-year-old house in the afternoon, ten minutes apart.
Worth knowing locally
Camden's proximity to Dover Air Force Base gives it a rental market that turns over on military orders rather than the calendar, and that has a practical consequence: a rental here may change hands three times in the span another town would see once. Every one of those handovers should include a rekey and a good number do not. If you are moving into a Camden rental, ask when the locks were last rekeyed, not whether they were, when.
What we actually get called to in Camden
Turnover rekeys, heavily. Lockouts across the town and the Route 13 retail strip. Car work in the shopping centre lots. Hardware upgrades on newer houses whose owners have worked out what a builder-grade lock is.
One more Camden note
Camden and Wyoming addresses are frequently written interchangeably and several streets cross the boundary between them. Give us the street and the nearest cross road rather than the town name; the two towns are close enough that guessing wrong costs a driver real minutes.

Getting to you
Roads, timing and what to tell us.
We reach Camden via Route 13, Route 10, Route 1 and the Camden-Wyoming Avenue corridor. Telling us exactly where you are is the single thing that most affects how quickly somebody gets there.
Ask us for a time and you will get a real one for Camden, worked out from where you actually are and what the roads are doing. What you will not get is a figure printed in advance, because a printed figure is written without knowing whether the job is a ground-floor front door or a car on an unlit shoulder in February. If the honest answer is that we are an hour away tonight, that is the answer you will hear before you decide to wait.
Have these four ready and the call takes two minutes
- Where you are, exactly. Street and cross road, or the centre and which side. Inside a garage, the level and the nearest stair or lift.
- What has locked you out. A house, a vehicle or a business, and which specific door.
- For a car, the year, make and model from the registration. Exactly as printed. The same model two years apart can take completely different keys.
- Any key that still exists. Even one at a relative's house counts, and saying so makes the work quicker and cheaper rather than the reverse.
Identification, every time
Before anything opens, we need something connecting you to the property or the vehicle, a licence, a lease, a utility bill, mail at the address, a registration or a title. Everybody in Camden is asked and nobody is exempt. If your documents happen to be on the wrong side of the locked door, say so on the phone; there are other ways to establish ownership, and settling it in advance is far better than debating it on your doorstep.

We also cover the Camden surrounds.
Same van, same number, same night. If you are between two of these, call and we will tell you honestly which is nearer.

Neighbourhoods
Where in Camden we work.
the historic core along Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Willow Grove, Rodney Village edge, Village of Westover, Hunters Pointe and the developments off Route 10, and everywhere between them. If your neighbourhood is not named, it is still covered; the list is illustrative rather than a boundary.
Business and commercial in Camden
The Route 13 retail corridor south of Dover runs through Camden, which gives it a commercial load well beyond its population, shopping centres, restaurants, franchises and service businesses. Standard modern commercial hardware, high cycle counts, and the usual neglected closers. Tenants generally want the work done before opening or after closing, which suits us.
Winter in Camden
Camden's newer subdivisions are built with attached garages, and the garage-to-house door is the one that fails. It opens into an unheated space, nobody weatherproofs it, and it carries the cheapest lock on the property. On the first hard morning of the year that is the door that will not turn, and it is also, uncomfortably often, the door with a knob lock and no deadbolt at all.
Worth knowing
Camden's rental market turns over on military orders from the nearby air base rather than on the calendar year, which means a rental here can change hands several times in the period another town would see one move.
Costs
What a Camden job actually costs, and what moves the number.
We do not publish a price list, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. What we will do is tell you exactly which factors change your price, so you can judge any quote you are given, including ours.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| When you call | Weekday afternoons are the cheapest hours in this trade. Nights, weekends and holidays cost more everywhere, and any company saying otherwise is recovering it somewhere else. |
| Distance and access in Camden | Not just how far, but what a technician has to do on arrival, ground-floor door, upper-level garage, roadside with traffic passing. |
| Lock type and grade | A builder-grade deadbolt and a restricted high-security cylinder require different tools, different skills and different time. |
| Condition on arrival | Intact hardware is a straightforward job. Hardware somebody has already levered, drilled or forced is a repair. |
| Exact vehicle details | Year, make and model determine the entire method for a car key. Guessing costs you a wasted visit. |
| Spare key in existence | Changes car work from origination to duplication. Always mention it. It only ever helps you. |
| Scope of the visit | One lock or six, the travel and set-up are the same, so the per-lock cost falls sharply. |
The bargain headline is not a price
If you see a headline number in Camden far below everybody else, that is a call-out fee quoted in isolation, with the actual work priced separately once somebody is standing at your door. It is the most common complaint in this trade nationally, and the defence is one question asked on the phone: "what is the total, including the call-out?"
A company that will not answer that over the phone is telling you how the invoice is going to go.
Before we arrive
Five minutes that save money and keep you safe.
- Take the key out and leave it out. Turning harder is the single most expensive reflex in this trade. A snapped blade inside a cylinder doubles the job and can mean replacing the lock.
- Move somewhere sheltered. Especially between November and March. Wait indoors, tell us where you are, and meet us at the door rather than standing at it.
- Do a full circuit of the property. Every other door, the garage entry, and any window that might be unlatched. It takes two minutes and it sometimes ends the problem entirely.
- Say no to the wire hanger. On a modern vehicle the inside of a door panel holds wiring, sensors and the window mechanism, and all of them are easier to damage than the lock is to open.
- Have ID ready before we arrive. A licence plus something tying you to the address or the vehicle. It is asked every time, of everyone, without exception.
- Escalate if anybody is shut in. A child or a pet inside a house or a hot car is an emergency, not a lockout. Call 911 first if there is any immediate risk.
Now or in the morning?
Half of what people call an emergency is not one.
There is a real financial gap between an out-of-hours visit and a booked one, and we would rather point you at the cheaper side of it than quietly take the more expensive job.
Tonight applies if you are outside, if an exterior door has stopped securing, or if keys have gone missing with a fob, badge or label pointing at your home. Nothing about that third case looks urgent, and it is the one that leaves a house open.
It can wait if the house is locked and secure and the problem is a stiff lock, a door that needs a shove, a snapped key you have a spare for, or an upgrade you have been meaning to do.
Apply one test: is the property secure right now? If yes, morning is cheaper and nothing is lost. If no, do not leave it overnight.
Questions
Asked by people in Camden.
How long will I be waiting in Camden?
Tell us exactly where you are and we will tell you, before you commit to waiting. Our approach to Camden is Route 13, Route 10, Route 1 and the Camden-Wyoming Avenue corridor, and the honest range shifts with the hour, the traffic and the weather. We would rather quote you forty minutes and arrive in thirty-five than quote twenty and leave you standing outside for an hour wondering.
Do night call-outs cost more?
Yes, and so it is with every locksmith in Camden and every other trade that works nights. The part that should matter to you is not that a night rate exists but whether you are told the figure before anyone drives out. You will be. And if what you are describing sounds like it can wait safely until the morning, we will say so rather than take the better-paid version of the job.
Can you make a car key in Camden without towing the car?
In most cases yes. We cut and program at the vehicle, wherever it is parked in Camden. Have the exact year, make and model ready, along with registration or title and photo ID. If your specific vehicle is one of the few where key origination is genuinely dealer-only, we will tell you on the phone rather than after driving out.
Is rekeying enough, or should I fit new locks?
For a change of ownership, rekeying is the answer and replacement is usually the upsell. Repinning the existing cylinders makes every key ever cut for them useless, which is the entire objective, and leaves the hardware, the finish and the door prep alone. New locks are justified where the existing ones are failing, damaged or genuinely unfit for the door. That is a judgement made by looking at them, not by looking at the calendar.
I am renting in Camden. How do I know the locks were changed?
Ask the landlord or agent directly, in writing, when the locks were last rekeyed and by whom. "They were changed" without a date and a name is not an answer. If they cannot say, ask for a rekey before you move in, most reasonable landlords agree, because it protects them as much as you, and it is an inexpensive job. If they will not, you can arrange it yourself with their written permission. What you should not do is change locks without asking; that usually breaches the lease and you end up paying twice.
How do you open a door without breaking it?
By operating the mechanism rather than attacking the door. Picking lifts the pins to their correct heights one at a time until the plug turns. Bypassing sidesteps the cylinder entirely, working the latch or the internal linkage instead. On some hardware neither is needed and the latch alone can be persuaded. All of it leaves you with a functioning lock, which is the point. Where a lock genuinely resists every non-destructive route, the cylinder is drilled and replaced, and the door and frame are not the target.
Do you work outside Camden itself?
Yes, across both New Castle and Kent counties, not just inside town limits. The places we most often work near Camden are Wyoming, Dover, Woodside, Magnolia, Felton, Dover Base Housing. Addresses that sit between two communities are common here and are not a problem; tell us the nearest cross road and we will work out the fastest approach.
Why do you need ID before opening a door?
Because a locksmith who opens doors on somebody's say-so would do the same at yours, on a day you were out. It is asked of everybody, without exception and without any suggestion that you are the problem. Have a licence and something tying you to the address ready and it takes half a minute.
Can you handle rental turnovers?
Yes, and batching them is where landlords in Camden save real money. Rekeying six units in one scheduled visit costs a fraction of six separate emergency call-outs across a month, and it means the work happens on your calendar rather than a tenant's. Give us the turnover dates and we will plan around them. Where a property has been let by the room for years, we will also tell you honestly how many keys are likely in circulation, which is usually more than the file says.
Kent County houses, ranches and farm-edge properties
Camden sits in Kent County just south of Dover, and the housing around it ranges from older homes in town to ranch houses and newer builds on larger lots where open farmland begins. A locksmith visit in this kind of area often involves more outbuildings than a city call. Detached garages, sheds, barns and workshops each have their own padlocks, hasps and sometimes older keyed latches, and they tend to be forgotten until someone cannot find the key on a Saturday morning. It is helpful to walk the property before the visit and write down every lock you can find, even ones you rarely use. A short list prevents the common situation where one forgotten shed lock is discovered after the technician has left.
When you call, tell us how many separate locks are involved and what kind they are: a hasp and padlock, a keyed knob, a deadbolt on a workshop door, or an overhead door lock. A technician can often rekey a set of padlocks so a single key opens all of them, which is a tidy solution for anyone carrying a ring of nearly identical keys. Weather exposure matters too, since padlocks sitting outside through a humid summer and a freezing winter corrode, and we will point out which ones are near the end of their useful life.
Rural lots also mean longer gaps between neighbors, so the lock on a house standing alone deserves a second look. A strong deadbolt only helps if the strike is anchored into the framing and the door edge is solid. We check both, and we describe what we find in plain words so you can decide what is worth doing now and what can wait. Nothing is done beyond the confirmed scope without your say. Where you have valuable tools or equipment stored far from the house, tell us so the plan can put the strongest lock where the loss would hurt most. We will lay out the scope in advance.
Mailboxes, gates and the locks you do not think about
People calling a locksmith in Camden often mention the house and forget the smaller locks that matter just as much. A cluster mailbox lock, a gate on a driveway, a keyed storage box and a lockable cabinet in a garage all carry their own keys and their own failure patterns. Some can be opened and rekeyed on the spot, while others are controlled by a separate party and cannot be touched without their approval, and it helps to know which kind you have before the visit. A quick photograph of the lock or latch sent in conversation with the call team, or described over the phone, helps identify the type before anyone drives out. Describe what you see, and we will ask follow-up questions.
Driveway and yard gates are an especially common trouble spot. Latches rust, posts shift as the ground freezes and thaws, and a gate that no longer lines up with its catch will not lock properly no matter how good the lock is. A technician checks the alignment, the hinge condition and whether the latch itself is sound. Sometimes the best fix is adjusting the post or the catch, and sometimes a replacement latch is the better answer; we explain which one applies and why. Never lubricate a gate latch with heavy grease, which collects dirt through the seasons. A technician can show you what to use and how often, so the latch keeps working between visits.
For any lock that is not on your house, tell us who owns the property or who controls access. We do work on locks you own or are authorized to change, and we may ask for reasonable confirmation of that before starting. This keeps everyone protected, including you. If you are a renter, mention it when you call, because the landlord's position affects what we can rekey or replace. If you are unsure who controls a lock, ask the owner or the management before the visit. Having that answer ready allows work to start smoothly, and the scope is always confirmed with you first.
