Felton, Delaware
What makes locks in Felton different.
Felton is a small farming-country town on the corridor south of Dover, with a compact centre and a great deal of open agricultural land around it. The population inside the town limits is under fifteen hundred; the properties we actually serve stretch well beyond it, down lanes that do not appear on most maps in any useful detail.
The housing stock
Older frame housing through the town and a scattering of newer building at the edges. Beyond the town, farmhouses, mobile and manufactured homes, and agricultural property. Manufactured homes are worth a separate note: their doors are thinner than site-built doors and take specific hardware, and fitting a standard residential deadbolt to one usually means fitting it badly. There is proper hardware made for these doors and it is not expensive.
Worth knowing locally
Agricultural property here is secured mostly with padlocks, hasps and chain, on barns, equipment stores, fuel tanks and gates that sit outdoors permanently. The cost of getting that wrong is high in this area, equipment theft from rural outbuildings is a real problem across farming Delaware, and the difference between a padlock that resists bolt croppers and one that does not is a shrouded shackle and a hardened body. It costs a little more once.
What we actually get called to in Felton
Rural property and outbuilding security. Residential lockouts and rekeys in town. Manufactured-home door hardware. Car work along Route 13. Farm gate and equipment-store padlock work.
One more Felton note
Rural Felton addresses are often several miles from the town centre down unlit lanes with no visible numbering. The nearest cross road, a landmark, and a light left on are worth more than the postal address, particularly at night.

Getting to you
Roads, timing and what to tell us.
We reach Felton via Route 13, Route 12, Route 1 and the roads out toward the farms. Telling us exactly where you are is the single thing that most affects how quickly somebody gets there.
There is no printed arrival time on this page for Felton, and that is deliberate rather than evasive. A website cannot know whether you are on a driveway, four levels up a parking deck, or on a verge in driving rain, and a number written without knowing that is not a promise, it is marketing. Call and you will get an estimate built around your actual address and the actual conditions, including, on the nights when it is true, that somebody nearer would reach you faster.
What to have in front of you when you ring
- Your precise position. Not the town, the street and cross road, or the retail park and which entrance. In a multi-storey, the level and the nearest stairwell.
- Which lock has stopped you. House, vehicle or premises, and specifically which door or which side.
- Vehicle details read off the registration. Year, make, model. Not from memory, two model years apart can mean an entirely different key and immobilizer system.
- Whether any key still exists anywhere. A spare at home, at work, with a relative. It changes the method, shortens the job and lowers the price.
The check we make at the door
Proof that the property or vehicle is yours: photo identification plus a lease, a bill, mail at the address, or a registration or title. It is asked of everybody in Felton, every time, and no exception has ever been made. The reasoning is short, a locksmith prepared to skip it at your neighbour's door is prepared to skip it at yours.

Neighbourhoods
Where in Felton we work.
the town centre blocks, Chimney Hill, the Route 12 farms, Sandtown Road properties and the rural lanes toward Viola and Harrington, and everywhere between them. If your neighbourhood is not named, it is still covered; the list is illustrative rather than a boundary.
Business and commercial in Felton
Limited and agricultural. Farm operations, equipment dealers, contractor yards, a small town-centre commercial strip and roadside businesses on Route 13. The hardware that matters here is padlocks, hasps, chain and gate locks rather than doors, and the exposure is total, because none of it is under cover.
Winter in Felton
Everything outdoors freezes and Felton has more outdoors than most. Gate padlocks, equipment store hasps and fuel store locks all seize, and the temptation is a blowtorch, which near fuel or on a painted gate is a genuinely bad idea. Warm the lock body, use de-icer, and if a padlock has to live outside year-round, buy one with a shrouded shackle and a sealed keyway and lubricate it in October.
Worth knowing
A large share of Felton addresses sit miles outside the town limits on unlit lanes with no visible numbering, which is why a cross road and a landmark get help to you faster than a postal address does.
Costs
What a Felton job actually costs, and what moves the number.
We do not publish a price list, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. What we will do is tell you exactly which factors change your price, so you can judge any quote you are given, including ours.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| When you call | Weekday afternoons are the cheapest hours in this trade. Nights, weekends and holidays cost more everywhere, and any company saying otherwise is recovering it somewhere else. |
| Distance and access in Felton | Not just how far, but what a technician has to do on arrival, ground-floor door, upper-level garage, roadside with traffic passing. |
| Lock type and grade | A builder-grade deadbolt and a restricted high-security cylinder require different tools, different skills and different time. |
| Condition on arrival | Intact hardware is a straightforward job. Hardware somebody has already levered, drilled or forced is a repair. |
| Exact vehicle details | Year, make and model determine the entire method for a car key. Guessing costs you a wasted visit. |
| Spare key in existence | Changes car work from origination to duplication. Always mention it. It only ever helps you. |
| Scope of the visit | One lock or six, the travel and set-up are the same, so the per-lock cost falls sharply. |
The bargain headline is not a price
If you see a headline number in Felton far below everybody else, that is a call-out fee quoted in isolation, with the actual work priced separately once somebody is standing at your door. It is the most common complaint in this trade nationally, and the defence is one question asked on the phone: "what is the total, including the call-out?"
A company that will not answer that over the phone is telling you how the invoice is going to go.
Before we arrive
Five minutes that save money and keep you safe.
- Take the key out and leave it out. Turning harder is the single most expensive reflex in this trade. A snapped blade inside a cylinder doubles the job and can mean replacing the lock.
- Move somewhere sheltered. Especially between November and March. Wait indoors, tell us where you are, and meet us at the door rather than standing at it.
- Do a full circuit of the property. Every other door, the garage entry, and any window that might be unlatched. It takes two minutes and it sometimes ends the problem entirely.
- Say no to the wire hanger. On a modern vehicle the inside of a door panel holds wiring, sensors and the window mechanism, and all of them are easier to damage than the lock is to open.
- Have ID ready before we arrive. A licence plus something tying you to the address or the vehicle. It is asked every time, of everyone, without exception.
- Escalate if anybody is shut in. A child or a pet inside a house or a hot car is an emergency, not a lockout. Call 911 first if there is any immediate risk.
Now or in the morning?
Half of what people call an emergency is not one.
There is a real financial gap between an out-of-hours visit and a booked one, and we would rather point you at the cheaper side of it than quietly take the more expensive job.
Right now covers being locked out, a door that no longer locks, and a lost keyring that identified where it belongs. People dismiss the last of those because nothing looks wrong, which is exactly the reason it should not wait.
It can wait if the house is locked and secure and the problem is a stiff lock, a door that needs a shove, a snapped key you have a spare for, or an upgrade you have been meaning to do.
Apply one test: is the property secure right now? If yes, morning is cheaper and nothing is lost. If no, do not leave it overnight.
Questions
Asked by people in Felton.
How long will I be waiting in Felton?
Tell us exactly where you are and we will tell you, before you commit to waiting. Our approach to Felton is Route 13, Route 12, Route 1 and the roads out toward the farms, and the honest range shifts with the hour, the traffic and the weather. We would rather quote you forty minutes and arrive in thirty-five than quote twenty and leave you standing outside for an hour wondering.
Do night call-outs cost more?
Yes, and so it is with every locksmith in Felton and every other trade that works nights. The part that should matter to you is not that a night rate exists but whether you are told the figure before anyone drives out. You will be. And if what you are describing sounds like it can wait safely until the morning, we will say so rather than take the better-paid version of the job.
Can you make a car key in Felton without towing the car?
In most cases yes. We cut and program at the vehicle, wherever it is parked in Felton. Have the exact year, make and model ready, along with registration or title and photo ID. If your specific vehicle is one of the few where key origination is genuinely dealer-only, we will tell you on the phone rather than after driving out.
Is rekeying enough, or should I fit new locks?
For a change of ownership, rekeying is the answer and replacement is usually the upsell. Repinning the existing cylinders makes every key ever cut for them useless, which is the entire objective, and leaves the hardware, the finish and the door prep alone. New locks are justified where the existing ones are failing, damaged or genuinely unfit for the door. That is a judgement made by looking at them, not by looking at the calendar.
What padlock should I put on a farm gate or equipment store?
A hardened, solid-body padlock with a shrouded or closed shackle, one where bolt croppers cannot get a bite. The shackle is what gets cut, so the less of it exposed, the better. Match it with a hasp that is at least as strong and that hides its own fixings when closed, because a good padlock on a hasp held by exposed screws protects nothing. Then lubricate it before winter. It costs more than a hardware-store padlock once, and it is the difference between an inconvenience and a stolen tractor.
Will you damage my door getting in?
Rarely, and it is never the opening move. A residential lock that is intact and functioning almost always yields to picking or a bypass, and leaving it working is worth more to you than saving us ten minutes. Drilling has three legitimate causes: a cylinder engineered to defeat picking, one that has broken internally, or one already ruined by a previous attempt. Any of those gets explained, with the replacement cost, before it happens.
Is my address near Felton still covered?
Almost certainly. We cover New Castle and Kent counties in full, including the addresses that fall between towns and the ones whose postal town does not match where they actually are. Around Felton we are regularly in Harrington, Viola, Frederica, Camden, Magnolia, Woodside. If you are unsure which community you count as, give us the cross road instead of the town name.
Do I need to be there when you arrive?
For an opening, yes, without exception. Somebody has to be present with identification tying them to the address or the vehicle. Planned work on an empty property is arranged differently, through the owner or the managing agent, and that is set up when you book rather than negotiated on the step.
Do you do commercial work out of hours?
Routinely, and for most Felton businesses it is the right call. Changing hardware on a shop or restaurant door during trading costs you more in lost custom than the work costs in the first place. Tell us your quiet window, before opening, after closing, a slow weekday, and we will schedule to it. For anything involving exit devices or fire-rated doors, we will also tell you what the hardware has to comply with rather than simply fitting what you asked for.
Farmland edges, long driveways and outbuildings
Felton is a small Kent County town surrounded by farmland, and many properties nearby have long driveways, detached garages, equipment sheds and barns. Locks on these buildings face dust, moisture and temperature swings, and they are sometimes the last thing anyone thinks about until a key goes missing. A technician starts with a short walk around the property to see which locks matter most and which are simply unreliable. Before the visit, jot down each building, the lock type, and who currently holds a key. This short list lets the technician plan the order of work and bring the right padlocks and cylinders.
Padlocks on farm buildings tend to be exposed to fertilizer dust, hay chaff and rain. Many fail from grit inside the body rather than from any break-in attempt. If you own several, you can have them keyed alike so one key opens them all, or keyed separately so each person holds only what they need. We explain how each arrangement works and what happens if one key is lost. Where grit is the main enemy, a closed-shackle or covered-keyway padlock tends to last longer than an open one. The technician can show the difference and explain what suits barns and sheds.
Because a farm property may have people coming and going, such as hired help, seasonal workers and deliveries, key control deserves thought. Decide which locks need a restricted key that cannot be copied at a hardware counter, and which ordinary keys are fine. Restricted keyways take more effort to manage but they keep a lost key from becoming a open door. Tell us about your situation and we will suggest a sensible arrangement. Keep a master list of who holds restricted keys and ask for the card or code needed to reorder them, if the system uses one. That paperwork is as important as the lock itself.
Vehicle, equipment and trailer key problems
Rural properties often include tractors, trailers, utility vehicles and equipment, each with ignition or storage locks of its own. Some of these use simple, common keys that are easy to duplicate, while others use more sophisticated ones. When a key breaks or goes missing, tell us the make and model, whether it is a vehicle with an electronic key, and where it is parked. That determines whether we can help on site. Photograph the ignition or lock face and any numbers stamped on it. Many keys can be cut by code or from the lock, but the technician needs to know exactly what is in front of them first.
For older equipment with a basic ignition, a technician may be able to cut a replacement key by working from the lock itself. For modern vehicles with chipped keys, the process includes programming and may require specific tools, and we tell you honestly whether your item is something we handle. Clear information up front saves a wasted trip and lets us bring the right blanks. If a key broke off inside a lock, do not push it further. Leave it as it is, tell us what happened, and the technician can plan the removal with the right tools.
Where a lock is frozen or seized from weather, avoid forcing it. Spraying heavy lubricant or hammering a key can make matters worse. Keep the lock dry if possible, note any recent weather, and wait for the technician. We explain the approach and any risk to the lock before we begin. We will explain whether the work is something we can complete on site, and what we cannot do, so that you are never left guessing about the next step. A clear answer beats a wasted drive.
