Newark, Delaware
What makes locks in Newark different.
Newark runs on an academic calendar, and so does our work here. The city empties and refills twice a year, and every one of those turnovers is a set of keys changing hands, often informally, often without anybody rekeying anything.
The housing stock
The housing splits three ways. Owner-occupied mid-century homes off Kirkwood Highway and around the older neighbourhoods, with softwood jambs that have moved through sixty Delaware winters. Purpose-built student apartments. And converted houses subdivided into student lets, which are where the real problems live, a four-bedroom house rented by the room, with four sets of keys, replaced ad hoc for years, and nobody holding a record.
Worth knowing locally
For landlords around the university, the arithmetic is simple and mostly ignored. If a house has been let by the room for five years, the number of keys that exist to it is not four. It is closer to twenty, held by people who moved out years ago. Rekeying between tenancies is cheap when batched in August and expensive when done one panicked call at a time in November.
What we actually get called to in Newark
August and May are our heaviest weeks here, move-in and move-out, back to back. Through the year it is lockouts on shared houses, keys lost on nights out on Main Street, and car lockouts in the campus and Christiana Mall lots. Landlords call for batch rekeys; students call at two in the morning.
One more Newark note
One Newark-specific warning: a house let by the room usually has one exterior lock and several interior ones, and tenants frequently do not know they are allowed to ask for the interior lock to be rekeyed. If you are renting a room and the previous occupant never returned a key, that is worth raising with your landlord.

Getting to you
Roads, timing and what to tell us.
We reach Newark via I-95, Route 896, Route 4, Kirkwood Highway and Main Street. Telling us exactly where you are is the single thing that most affects how quickly somebody gets there.
We do not publish an arrival-time promise, in Newark or anywhere else. A guaranteed twenty minutes is a number written before anyone knows whether you are in a driveway, a parking structure, or on a shoulder in the rain. What you get instead is a realistic estimate for your location, at that hour, in that weather, and if we are genuinely too far away to be useful to you tonight, we will say so rather than leave you waiting.
Four things to have ready when you call
- Exactly where you are. A street address, or the shopping centre and which side of it. In a garage, the level and nearest stairwell.
- What is locked. House, car or business, and which door.
- For a vehicle: year, make and model. Exactly, from the registration. A 2014 and a 2016 of the same model can use completely different key systems.
- Whether you have any key at all. One working key makes a car job considerably faster and cheaper. Being honest about it never raises your price.
What we will ask for at the door
Identification connecting you to the property or the vehicle, a licence, a lease, a utility bill, mail at the address, or a registration or title for a car. We ask every time, in Newark and everywhere else, with no exceptions. A locksmith who opens a door because somebody standing outside it said it was theirs would do the same at yours.

We also cover the Newark surrounds.
Same van, same number, same night. If you are between two of these, call and we will tell you honestly which is nearer.

Neighbourhoods
Where in Newark we work.
Downtown Main Street, the University of Delaware campus edge, Newark Manor, Nottingham Green, Fairfield, Brookside, Windy Hills, Cherry Hill and the developments off Route 896, and everywhere between them. If your neighbourhood is not named, it is still covered; the list is illustrative rather than a boundary.
Business and commercial in Newark
Newark's commercial work is dominated by two things: the Main Street trade and student-let landlords. Main Street means restaurants, bars and small retail with aluminium storefronts, high cycle counts and exit hardware that gets leaned on by crowds every weekend. Landlord work means volume rekeying, and the honest conversation about whether a keypad makes more sense than cutting metal four times a year.
Winter in Newark
Newark empties over winter break, and empty student houses are where frozen and seized locks go unnoticed for weeks. A house shut up in mid-December with a marginal lock is a house somebody cannot get into in January. Landlords who do a walk-round before the break catch it; the ones who do not get the call on move-in day.
Worth knowing
Newark's population effectively doubles and halves twice a year with the academic calendar, which makes it the most key-turnover-heavy square mile in Delaware.
Costs
What a Newark job actually costs, and what moves the number.
One price cannot cover work that ranges from a two-minute adjustment to originating a key from nothing at three in the morning. What can be published honestly is the set of things that move the number, so you are judging a quote rather than accepting it.
| What changes the price | Why |
|---|---|
| The hour | Two in the afternoon costs less than two in the morning. Everywhere, for everyone. If your job can wait until morning we will tell you. |
| Where in Newark you are | A driveway is a different job from a fourth-floor parking structure or an unlit road with no shoulder. |
| What kind of lock | A standard residential deadbolt, a high-security cylinder and an aluminum storefront deadlatch are three different jobs with three different prices. |
| Whether anything is damaged | A locked door is one job. A door somebody has already tried to force is another, and the second is always dearer. |
| For vehicles: year, make, model | The single biggest variable in car work. A 2004 pickup and a 2022 push-to-start are not comparable jobs. |
| Whether you still hold a key | One working key makes car work faster and cheaper. Being honest about it never raises your price. |
| How many doors | Rekeying four locks in one visit costs far less per lock than four separate call-outs. |
Why the cheap number is the expensive one
A very low advertised figure is a call-out fee, not a price. It buys a technician arriving; the work is quoted separately once they are at your door and you have already waited. The complaint pattern is identical everywhere, a small number on the advert, a large one on the invoice.
Get the total on the phone before anybody drives to Newark, and get it as a figure rather than a range. If it cannot be given, you have learned what you needed to know.
Before we arrive
Five minutes that save money and keep you safe.
- Put the key down. Force is the enemy here. A key that will not turn normally is telling you something has failed inside, and pushing harder finishes the job, usually by snapping the blade off in the cylinder.
- Get out of the weather. Waiting outside is the part people underestimate. A neighbour, a lobby, a business that is open. Tell us where you will be so we are not looking for you.
- Walk the whole building. Back door, side door, garage entry, bulkhead, a ground-floor window. People find a way in surprisingly often, and it costs nothing to check.
- Turn down the helpful bystander. The coat hanger through a car door reaches wiring, airbag sensors and window regulators long before it reaches the lock, and the damage outlasts the lockout.
- Locate proof of ownership. Licence, lease, utility bill, registration or title. We will ask for it, and having it ready is thirty seconds saved at the door.
- Flag anyone shut inside immediately. A child or an animal in a house or a vehicle is a different call entirely. If it is urgent, ring 911 first and us second.
Does this need to be tonight?
The honest answer is often no.
We would rather you spent less. If the situation can safely wait for normal hours, booking it is significantly cheaper than an emergency visit, and telling you so costs us a job we did not deserve.
Now if you are shut out, if an exterior door no longer locks, or if keys have vanished together with anything naming your address. The last of those looks like nothing at all, and it is the one that leaves the house open.
Do book it for a new purchase, a stiff or dropped door, a key that snapped while you still hold a spare, or an upgrade you have been putting off.
The test is simple and it is the only one that matters: is the property secure at this moment? Secure means it waits. Not secure means it does not.
Questions
Asked by people in Newark.
What is a realistic wait for Newark?
A real one, given on the phone, for your address and the conditions at that moment. We come into Newark on I-95, Route 896, Route 4, Kirkwood Highway and Main Street, and how long that takes at two in the afternoon and two in the morning in February are different numbers. We will give you the one that applies rather than the one that sounds best, and if we are genuinely too far away to help you tonight, we will tell you that instead of leaving you waiting.
Are weekends and holidays priced differently?
They do, in this trade and every other one that works unsociable hours. A company advertising a flat rate around the clock has raised its daytime price to pay for it. What you should insist on, from us or anyone, is the complete figure including the call-out before a van sets off, so nothing is renegotiated on your doorstep. Ask for the total and you always know where you stand.
Do you come to the car, or does it have to come to you?
We come to it. Everything for an automotive key, cutting, programming, testing, happens at the vehicle, wherever it is sitting in Newark. That is the whole point of a mobile service and it is the reason people call us rather than arranging a tow. Give us the exact year, make and model, tell us whether you still have any key at all, and have your registration or title and photo ID ready for when we arrive.
I just bought a house in Newark. Should I rekey?
In the first week, yes. The point is not suspicion, it is that the question has no answer: neither you nor the seller can account for every key cut over the life of that house. A rekey removes the uncertainty for one visit and very little money, and it is the cheapest security decision available on a property you have just bought.
I rent a room in a shared house in Newark. Can I get my own lock changed?
Ask your landlord first, most agree, and many pay, because it protects them too. What you should not do is change it yourself without asking; that usually breaches the lease and you end up paying to put it back. If a previous occupant of your room never returned a key, that is a completely reasonable thing to raise, and a interior door rekey is a small job.
Do you have to drill the lock?
No, and if somebody tells you otherwise before they have even looked, that is worth pausing on. Picking, bypassing and manipulation open most residential locks and leave them working afterwards. Drilling exists for the narrow set of cases where none of that will work: a hardened cylinder built to resist it, a mechanism that has failed inside, or a lock already levered by a well-meaning neighbour. When it is genuinely the right call we say so first, name the cost of the replacement, and let you make the decision rather than discovering it on the invoice.
Which places near Newark do you serve?
Every community in New Castle and Kent counties. The ones adjoining Newark that we are in most often are Bear, Glasgow, Brookside, Christiana, Elsmere, Hockessin. Unincorporated addresses and rural lanes are covered the same as anywhere else, those simply need a cross road and a landmark rather than a street number to find quickly.
Can you let someone else in for me?
No, and that protection cuts both ways. Anybody we open a door for has to show identification connecting them to that property or vehicle, in person. If somebody other than you genuinely needs to be there, that gets arranged beforehand with documentation rather than improvised on the step. Tell us the situation when you book and we will tell you exactly what it needs. A company willing to skip this at your request is a company willing to skip it when somebody else stands at your door.
Can you set up a system so I know who has access?
Yes, and for any Newark business or landlord with more than a few doors it is worth doing properly. A master key system gives each person exactly the access their role needs and no more, documented in a keying chart that you keep. That chart is the part most people never receive, and it is the part that matters, a system your locksmith holds and you do not is a system you cannot audit. Restricted keyways can be added where you also need to control who can have copies cut.
Student housing, lease turnovers and rekeying between tenants
Newark is home to the University of Delaware, which means a large share of nearby housing is rented, often by groups of students. Leases turn over on a regular cycle, and keys tend to scatter: roommates move out, friends hold spares and copies get made at the last minute. For landlords and tenants alike, the cleanest reset is rekeying, which changes the inside of the lock so earlier keys stop working. Our technician can handle multiple doors in one visit and keep keys consistent. When the job is finished we operate the lock and the door together several times with you watching, so you know it feels right before we leave.
When arranging a turnover job, it helps to know how many exterior doors there are, whether bedrooms have individual locks and whether the building uses shared hallways or a main entry. We ask who has the authority to approve work, since a tenant, a landlord and a property manager may each have a role. We also suggest labeling and logging keys as they are handed out, which makes it much easier to see who holds what. If you are comparing choices, ask us to lay them side by side with the practical differences in daily use, not only the technical ones.
Students often face lockouts at inconvenient moments, usually after being out and misplacing a key or phone. If you are locked out of your own room or apartment, have proof that you live there ready, such as a lease or ID with matching address, since our technician will want to confirm that before opening a door. We explain the plan and any quote before starting. Call us and we will confirm availability near campus. Small details such as screw length, strike alignment and how a latch seats are easy to overlook, yet they decide how well hardware performs day to day.
