Kia Optima keys

Optima key lost? Made where the sedan is parked.

Kia sold the Optima for roughly two decades before renaming its midsize sedan the K5, so there are a lot of Optimas still on the road, many of them on their second or third owner. Before a key is cut, we pin down which Optima you have, gas or hybrid, key slot or start button, and then make the key at the car.

The system

What key does an Optima use?

The Optima arrived in the United States in the early 2000s as a practical, affordable midsize sedan. It stayed modest through the 2000s, then a dramatic redesign for the 2011 model year turned it into one of Kia's best known cars. A further generation followed for 2016, and after the 2020 model year Kia replaced the Optima name with K5. The key changed a great deal across that span.

Pre 2011 Optimas are conventional. A steel key turns the ignition, and the lock buttons sit either on the key head or on a separate transmitter. The practical problems on these cars now are age problems: rounded cuts, tired door cylinders and transmitters whose buttons stopped answering years ago.

The 2011 redesign split the lineup in two. The LX style trims mostly kept a key slot and a switchblade style key whose blade folds into the remote. The EX and SX style trims mostly moved to a pocket fob and a start button, with a request button on the front door handles. Year alone will not tell you which one a given Optima has.

The Optima Hybrid, and later a plug in version, lived alongside the gas car through the 2010s. Their keys look like the gas car's but should be matched to the hybrid specifically, because the parts catalog treats them as their own models.

Some turn key Optimas are also on the list of Kia vehicles built for the American market without an engine immobilizer, the weakness that thieves exploited during the well publicized wave of Kia and Hyundai thefts. Our Tucson key page explains the background; for the Optima, the short version is that a lost key on one of those cars is handled with the lock cylinders, not the computer.

Many push button Optimas also offered remote start from the fob. If yours had it, the replacement should have it too.

A look at the dash settles most of it. Slot on the column, switchblade key. Button on the dash, pocket fob.

Systems by generation

From basic sedan to the 2011 redesign to the K5 rename, and what each meant for the key

For Optima owners, the 2011 model year is the dividing line. Before it, keys were conventional. After it, the lineup split between a switchblade key and a pocket fob depending on trim, and some of the turn key cars were built without the immobilizer most buyers assumed was there.

Read the table as a sketch. Trim content shifted from year to year, the hybrid and plug in cars had their own parts, and plenty of Optimas carry a replacement key from a previous owner. The car in front of us has the final word.

On a switchblade key Optima, the new key needs a blade that turns both the driver door and the ignition, a remote that answers for lock, unlock, alarm and trunk, and, on cars built with an immobilizer, a chip that the engine computer accepts. On the cars built without one, the blade by itself starts the engine, so the job is shorter but a lost key carries more risk.

On a pocket fob Optima, the fob is paired for the door handle buttons and the start button, and the slim emergency blade inside is cut so the driver door opens mechanically when the fob or the car battery is flat. Where remote start was fitted, we confirm the new fob starts the car from outside as well.

On the hybrid and plug in cars, the dash shows a ready indication instead of an engine idle, but the key work follows the same pattern. Just tell us it is a hybrid when you call.

Why the trunk button matters on a sedan

Sedan owners use the trunk release on the key more than they realize, especially when loading groceries or luggage. A replacement key or fob without a working trunk button will still start the car and lock the doors, but the trunk will have to be opened from inside the cabin. We match the button layout to your original key and test the trunk release specifically.

The first hour after an Optima key goes missing

Start by retracing the last place the car was driven and the last place you remember the key in your hand. Call the store, the gym or the office where you were, since keys handed in at a front desk are common. Check coat pockets, bags and the ground around the car, including under it. If the car is unlocked and you can see inside, look in the door pockets, under the seats and between the seat and the console, where keys slip more often than people expect.

If the key is still missing, think about what else was on the ring. A house key, a work badge, a mailbox key or anything with your address changes the priority. On a turn key Optima built without an immobilizer, a key lost near the car, together with something that identifies the car or the owner, is a real theft risk, and it is worth moving the car somewhere secure or adding a steering wheel lock until the cylinders are addressed.

If you have a spare at home, the fastest path is often to have someone bring it and then schedule a replacement key on your own time. If there is no spare, call us with the year, trim and location, and we will tell you what the visit involves before anyone drives out. Either way, avoid buying a key online in a hurry. A mismatched key often cannot be set up, and it delays the real fix.

When the lost key turns up afterward

It happens often: a new key is made on Tuesday, and on Saturday the old one appears in a gym bag. What that old key can still do depends on the car. On a pocket fob Optima, if the fobs were paired again during the visit and the missing fob was not present, it has usually been dropped from the car's list and will no longer start the engine, although its emergency blade still opens the driver door. It can normally be added back later, which turns it into a useful spare.

On a turn key Optima with an immobilizer, the same logic applies to the chip: a key left off the list will turn the ignition but the engine will not stay running. On a turn key Optima built without an immobilizer, a found key works exactly as it did before, because nothing about the car changed unless the cylinders were rekeyed. If the cylinders were rekeyed, the old key is now just a piece of metal. Either way, tell us about a found key on the next call, so we know how many working keys the car really has.

Getting the Optima ready

Look at the trunk lid for the trim badge and at the dash for a slot or a button. Say whether the car is gas, hybrid or plug in. Put the registration and the matching driver license in one place; if the car belongs to a relative or an employer, a signed note and a reachable phone number do the job. Call (302) 534-0150 with the location in New Castle or Kent county.

Two routes

Locksmith or Kia dealer for an Optima key?

Kia service departments order keys against the vehicle identification number and pair them on site, which works well when the Optima can be driven in with a spare. When the last key is gone, the sedan needs a tow first.

We skip the tow. The van carries Optima switchblade blanks and pocket fobs in the common styles, a key machine and the pairing gear, so most Optimas get their key in the lot or driveway where they sit.

Kia is the better stop when the car has had a smart key receiver or engine computer replaced, when a campaign letter covers the key system, or when a car needs a procedure that runs only through the factory terminal.

Kia is also the only source for its anti theft software on the affected turn key cars. Having the key made by us and the software done at the dealer later is a common split.

We tell you before cutting whether the key in the bag is a Kia original or an aftermarket part, and we match the button layout, including trunk and remote start.

For a used Optima you are about to buy, ask the seller for every key and try each one on the doors, the trunk and the ignition. A spare made before anything is lost is the least disruptive key job there is.

If your particular Optima is one we cannot finish at the car, you hear that on the call, before any trip.

Diagnosis

Common Optima key problems

Remote start that refuses to run is usually doing its job. Most factory remote start systems will not start the car if a door, the hood or the trunk is open, if the car is not locked, or if the brake pedal is being pressed. Check those before blaming the fob.

A trunk that will not open from the key but opens from the release inside the cabin points to the key's button or its pairing, not the trunk latch.

A switchblade key that will not flip open sometimes has grit in the release. A little compressed air around the button can free it. A cracked pivot needs a new housing.

If the key will not turn and the steering wheel feels locked, rock the wheel gently while turning the key. The steering lock holds the cylinder until the pressure comes off.

A pocket fob that works only when touching the door handle usually has a weak coin battery. Once the new battery is in, range should return to normal.

Door cylinders on Optimas parked outdoors for years can grow stiff. A key that turns the ignition easily but fights the driver door needs lock lubricant, not a new key.

A blade snapped off in the driver door cylinder should be left alone until it can be extracted properly. Pushing on it drives it deeper.

After a theft attempt on a turn key car, a damaged column and ignition come first. New keys are cut to whatever cylinder is fitted once the repair is done.

Hybrid Optimas that show nothing when the start button is pressed often have a flat twelve volt battery rather than a key problem.

Before service

What to have ready for an Optima

Optima owners are often commuters and budget minded drivers who bought a well equipped sedan and want a key that works the way the original did.

Photograph the key you still have, both sides, including the trunk and remote start buttons if there are any. It saves a guess about which fob to bring.

Read the trim badge off the trunk lid. On the Optima, LX versus EX or SX is often the whole answer to which key the car uses.

Say whether the car is a hybrid or plug in. It changes which part number we pull.

If the car sits in a parking garage, send the level and space. Low garage ceilings do not bother us, but finding the car quickly helps.

Mention any aftermarket remote starter. Some add their own transmitter that needs separate setup.

If the car was damaged in a theft attempt, tell us before we come. The ignition repair decides which key gets cut.

Keep the paperwork handy: registration or title, plus the license of the person named on it, or a signed note from that person.

At the end, every key is tried on the driver door, the trunk, the alarm, remote start where fitted, and the ignition or start button.

Straight answers

Kia Optima key replacement FAQ

Can a new Optima key be made with no original?

For almost every Optima year, yes. The cuts come from the car, the blade is cut, and the switchblade key or pocket fob is paired so the doors, trunk and start all respond. On turn key cars without an immobilizer, only the blade and the remote buttons are involved. Give us the year, trim, gas or hybrid, and whether it has a start button, and we will describe the visit before we come.

Can a lost key be deleted from my turn key Optima?

On a turn key Optima without an immobilizer, there is no key memory to delete from, so a lost key that fits the ignition can still start the car. Rekeying or replacing the ignition and door cylinders makes that key useless. On push button Optimas, lost fobs usually drop off the accepted list when the remaining fobs are paired again.

Why won't my Optima remote start work with the new fob?

First check the conditions: doors, hood and trunk closed, car locked, and nobody pressing the brake. If those are fine and the original fob did remote start, the new fob may not have been set up for it or may be a model without that feature. We test remote start before leaving whenever the car supports it.

Is the Optima Hybrid key different?

The Optima Hybrid uses the same general switchblade key or pocket fob approach as the gas model, split by trim, but specific parts should be confirmed separately. Tell us the car is a hybrid or plug in hybrid when you call so we bring a compatible key.

Does a K5 key work in an Optima?

No. The K5 replaced the Optima name, but it is a newer car with its own parts. An Optima needs a key matched to the Optima year and trim. If you have a key labeled for the K5, do not expect it to pair with an Optima.

My Optima key is stuck in the ignition. What should I try?

Make sure the shifter is fully in Park and the car is switched off, then try again. If the steering wheel is under tension, turn it slightly while removing the key. A key that still will not release with the car in Park points to the ignition cylinder or shifter interlock, which can be diagnosed on site.

Which Optima key jobs belong at the Kia dealer?

The dealer handles Kia's anti theft software, cars with a freshly replaced smart key or engine module, open campaigns on the key system, and any Optima whose pairing is locked to the factory terminal. Outside those, the key can normally be made in the parking spot where the car sits.
